Molly Brueggemeier and Erin Fitzhenry, president and vice president of the ICHS Traffic Safety Club, welcomed Mel Gonzales, RN to the school. Ms. Gonzalez is a trauma nurse at HUMC and the school’s traffic safety advisor. She spoke about the dangers of reckless and distracted driving and works with schools across Bergen County on their driver’s education programs as well. Ms. Gonzales stressed the importance of making good choices. “Every time you get in a vehicle, you need to be careful about the choices you make; otherwise it could be your last,”
Chanel Banta, ICHS Traffic Safety club advisor and health/physical education teacher shared, “The assembly addressed a prominent issue for teens. It will definitely help people with driving. I thought the most impactful thing was showing the examples of what happens to people who are just people like us and how one bad decision can affect their lives.”
The ICHS Traffic Safety Club works hand in hand with Hackensack University Medical Center to advocate for safe driving. As members of the club they do school wide seatbelt checks, public service announcements, and much more to spread the word about safe driving.
